I often think about what music I’d make if there were no impossibilities. No lack of talent, no laziness, no time constraints. Sometimes I think I’d like to play dance-y music. I’d want to be in a band like TV on the Radio, or Vampire Weekend. Or even the Animals. Or Dr. Dog. Sometimes I wish I could write poetry and set it to hardcore music, like mewithoutYou. Sometimes I want to just have a hoedown and be in a band like Old Crow Medicine Show.
But I think most of the time, I just want to be in one of those bands where, when they play, you look out and see the whole entire crowd, eyes closed, swaying. I want to be in a close-your-eyes-and-sway band. Because when your eyes are open, no matter how much you dance with abandon, you can always see the people around you, and they always have better dance moves, or look cooler. Or they’re annoying and detract from the moment.
But with eyes closed? It’s you and the music. And you sway. And weave. And feel.
